MyPowerTennis turns the Apple Watch into a stroke analyser: the app measures racquet head and wrist speed, automatically detects forehand, backhand and serve, and rates movement quality with a dedicated metric. Impact detection runs at 800 Hz. Unlike comparable systems, the app needs no sensor mounted on the racquet. All analysis happens on the device. How fast is my serve? An Apple Watch is enough to answer

Until recently, amateur tennis offered two answers to that question: a radar gun costing several thousand euros, or a sensor clipped to the racquet handle that changes how the racquet feels. MyPowerTennis, developed in Lower Austria, takes a third route – it uses only the motion sensors of the Apple Watch that many players already wear.

Two values are measured: racquet head speed, derived from angular velocity and racquet radius, and wrist speed as a drift-damped integration of acceleration data. Both appear on the watch immediately after the stroke, colour-coded from blue to red.

The technically notable part is impact detection. At the usual sampling rate of 100 Hz it is possible to tell that ball contact occurred – but not precisely when. MyPowerTennis therefore samples the sensors at 800 Hz on newer Apple Watch models and pinpoints the moment of impact to within a few milliseconds. From this it derives acceleration time, follow-through time and a timing index.

The app also detects the stroke type automatically – forehand, backhand or serve – estimates spin tendency and reconstructs the path of the wrist through the swing. A dedicated metric rates the consistency of the movement, that is, quality independent of raw speed. Each stroke receives a score from 0 to 100.

The developer is explicit about the limits of the method: racquet head speed is a radius-based estimate with a deviation of roughly 10 to 20 per cent; wrist speed lies between 5 and 15 per cent. What is measured is the racquet, not the ball. The value therefore lies in comparison over time – between strokes, sessions and training phases.

Sessions are stored on the device and optionally synced across iPhone, iPad and Watch through the user's private iCloud. There are no proprietary servers and no tracking. Data can be exported as CSV, PDF or a JSON archive.

MyPowerTennis comes from Heinrich Beinhofer, a software developer and club player at ATSV Tulln. The idea grew out of practice: when you change a movement, you rarely sense reliably whether it got better or worse – instinct deceives. A measured number after every stroke makes the difference visible, drill by drill.
